Mississippi scored the first 17 points of the game and survived poor free-throw shooting to post a 64-61 overtime victory over previously unbeaten Miami (Fla.) on Friday.

The host Rebels (5-1) trailed 53-48 with four minutes left but scored six of the final seven points of regulation to force extra time. In overtime, Murphy Holloway’s dunk with 3:10 left gave Ole Miss the lead at 60-58.

Malcolm Grant, who hit six 3-pointers and led Miami with 22 points, banked in a 3-pointer to bring the Hurricanes within 62-61 with 23 seconds left in overtime. Jarvis Summers hit two free throws with 20 seconds left to finish off the scoring.

Grant’s desperation 3-pointer at the buzzer fell short and the Rebels survived despite shooting just 19-of-30 from the free-throw line (63.3 percent).

Miami’s Garrius Adams hit a free throw with 29 seconds left in regulation, giving the Hurricanes a 54-53 advantage. Dundrecous Nelson’s free throw tied the game at 54-54 for the Rebels with 12.9 seconds left.

The Hurricanes missed their first nine shots as Ole Miss raced to a 17-0 lead. Kenny Kadji’s dunk with 12:23 to go snapped the run, and sparked a 25-7 Hurricanes surge that gave Miami a 25-24 lead on two Durand Scott free throws with 1:41 left in the first half.

Nelson led Ole Miss with 17 points.

Ole Miss plays Thursday at DePaul. Miami travels Tuesday to Purdue.
