Jamar Samuels had 12 points in his season debut, and freshman Thomas Gipson added a team-high 13 points and nine rebounds as Kansas State defeated visiting Maryland-Eastern Shore 92-50 on Tuesday.

Samuels, a senior forward, missed the first two games because of a violation of team rules but turned in a strong effort for the Wildcats, who improved to 3-0 and won their 36th straight non-conference home game.

He scored six of his points in the first half as Kansas State took a 36-29 lead into halftime. The Wildcats used a 28-9 run to open the second half, stretching the lead to 64-38 with 11:37 left before really pulling away.

Gipson, who had a team-high 19 points and seven rebounds in the Wildcats’ win last week against Loyola, was just as strong defensively. His inside presence helped force Maryland-Eastern Shore into several low-percentage jump shots as the Hawks shot only 32.1 percent from the field and failed to reach 60 points for the fourth time this year.

Rodney McGruder and Martavious Irving had 11 points apiece for Kansas State, which made 52.5 percent of its field goal attempts and hit 10-of-24 3-pointers.

Percy Woods had 13 points for the Hawks (1-4), who have lost all of their games by 16 or more and have dropped three straight overall. Maryland-Eastern Shore (1-4) was picked to finish 12th in the 13-team Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference.

Samuels averaged 8.5 points and 5.4 rebounds last year for Kansas State, which came into the game on eight days rest and will have another eight-day break before it travels to Blacksburg, Va., to take on Virginia Tech.
