CHARLOTTE -- Defending champion Duke advanced to the Sweet 16 for the 12th time in 14 years and gave Coach Mike Krzyzewski his 900th career win as the Blue Devils held off Michigan 73-71 on Sunday.

Coach K now sits two wins behind Bob Knight’s record for Division I men’s basketball victories.

The eighth-seeded Wolverines whittled a 15-point second-half deficit to one, threatening to upset the top seed. Then Duke freshman Kyrie Irving banked in a short jumper, his only basket of the game, with 31 seconds left.

Michigan’s Darius Morris answered with a layup with 10 seconds to go. After Nolan Smith (24 points ) made one of two free throws, Morris had a chance to send the game to overtime. His runner in the lane hit the back rim and Duke celebrated.

The Blue Devils (32-4) will face the Texas-Arizona winner on Thursday in Anaheim, Calif.

Overachieving Michigan (21-14) hung close thanks to 16 points and six assists from Morris and 15 points from freshman Tim Hardaway Jr., who scored seven straight to make it 70-69 Duke with 1:30 left.

Both teams shot 51 percent. Duke outrebounded the smaller Wolverines 31-18 and did a reasonably good job on Michigan’s lethal 3-point shooters, who went 7 of 21.

Kyle Singler had 13 points and eight rebounds for the Blue Devils, and Irving and Ryan Kelly scored 11 apiece.
