CLEVELAND - Darius Johnson-Odom scored a game-high 19 points, including 13 in the second half, as No. 11 seed Marquette led from start to finish to knock off Xavier 66-55 in the second round of the NCAA tournament on Friday.

Jimmy Butler added 15 points, five rebounds, four assists, and four steals for the Golden Eagles (21-14), who advance to the third round for the first time since 2009 and will meet Syracuse on Sunday.

Sixth-seeded Xavier (24-8), which had advanced to the Round of 32 in each of the last four years, shot only 40.4 percent from the field as All-America guard and Atlantic 10 Conference Player of the Year Tu Holloway was held to five points on 1-of-9 shooting from the field. Holloway was averaging 20.2 per game.

Holloway and Mark Lyons, who combined to average 34 points this season, were held to 11.

Marquette broke open a close game late in the first half when it extended a 20-17 lead with a 13-3 run in the final 4:11 to take a 33-20 halftime advantage as Butler scored 11 in the opening 20 minutes.

The Golden Eagles would build the lead to 18 early in the second half before Xavier cut the Marquette lead to 51-43 with 8:45 remaining. Johnson-Odom then triggered a 7-0 run with a long 3-pointer to keep the Golden Eagles in control.

Marquette shot 53.3 percent from the field and got a solid performance off the bench from Jae Crowder, who had 10 points and six rebounds.

Andrew Taylor came off the bench to score a career-high 16 points while Kenny Frease added 12 for the Musketeers.
