Playing on its homecourt, Hawaii beat reeling Mississippi State 68-57 in the fifth-place game at the Hawaiian Airlines Diamond Head Classic in Honolulu Saturday.

The Warriors, a pleasant surprise under first-year coach Gib Arnold, improved to 9-3 with the easy win. They led 42-23 at halftime.

Arizona transfer Zane Johnson, a 6-6 junior, led Hawaii with 18 points, while senior guard Hiram Thompson scored 16, making all 11 of his free throws.

The Bulldogs (8-5) played without troubled sophomore forward Renardo Sidney and junior forward Elgin Bailey, who are suspended indefinitely. The roommates were caught on camera fighting in the stands Thursday night following the Bulldogs’ second-round win. Punches were thrown and the fight lasted several minutes until teammates and coaches broke it up.

Senior forward Kodi Augustus led Mississippi State with 18 points.
