Durrell Summers got hot at the right time for Michigan State.

Summers hit a pair of crucial 3-pointers in the final minutes and the second-ranked Spartans outlasted No. 11 Washington 76-71 in the third-place game at the Maui Classic.

Both teams likely had designs on meeting each other for the title, but Connecticut beat Michigan State (4-1) and Kentucky got the better of Washington (3-2) in the semifinals.

Despite the game being a consolation, both teams played like it meant a lot.

Washington led 44-34 at the half, but Michigan State battled back. Kalin Lucas made a steal and a layup to give the Spartans a 64-63 lead with 6:36 to go and the game went back-and-forth from there.

The Huskies regained the lead, 68-66, on a pair of free throws by Matthew Bryan-Amaning with 2:42 to go, but Summers was ready with an answer. One for his last 10 from the arc in the tournament, Summers came off a screen and buried a 3-pointer from the right of the circle to make it 69-68 with 1:38 to go. He drained another 49 seconds later to increase the lead to 72-68.

Washington wouldn’t go away and Bryan-Amaning was at the line with a chance to tie with 14 seconds left, but he missed the second of two shots. Michigan State added four free throws in the final eight seconds to ice it.

Lucas led Michigan State with 29 points on 9-of-13 shooting while Bryan-Amaning had 15 for Washington.
