St. John’s finally got a win over a ranked team, and continued its impressive start in conference play.

Justin Brownlee scored on a putback in the closing seconds, and the Red Storm remained perfect in the Big East with a 61-58 victory over No. 13 Georgetown on Monday at Madison Square Garden.

St. John’s (10-3, 3-0 Big East) is off to its best start in conference play since going 4-0 in the 1999-2000 season. With previous wins over West Virginia and Providence, the Red Storm are headed in the right direction under first-year coach Steve Lavin.

The game went back-and-forth in the closing minutes as Georgetown (12-3, 1-2) took a 56-55 lead with 55 seconds to go on a three-point play by Jason Clark.

Dwight Hardy answered with a nifty reverse layup to put the Red Storm on top 57-56, but Clark came up with a loose ball after a miss by Austin Freeman and was fouled. He made two free throws to give Georgetown a one-point lead, but it was short-lived.

Hardy, who scored 20 points, got into the lane and drew three Georgetown defenders. His layup was off the mark, but no one was left to block out Brownlee, who put back the miss to make it 59-58.

Freeman had his shot blocked on the ensuing possession, and Hardy made two free throws to cap the scoring and as the Red Storm snapped a 14-game losing streak against teams in the Top 25 dating back to January 2009.

Hollis Thompson led Georgetown with 16 points.
