Pac-10 favorite Washington needed overtime to win its conference opener Wednesday night.

Justin Holiday scored Washington’s first five points in overtime, and the Huskies hit their first eight free throws of the extra session to hold off host Southern Cal 73-67.

Matthew Bryan-Amaning and Terrence Ross both scored 18 points for the Huskies (11-2), who never trailed in overtime.

USC forced overtime when Nikola Vucevic tied the game with a pair of free throws with 1:15 to play before the Huskies missed a pair of 3-pointers in the final minute.

USC (8-6, 0-1) raced out to a 12-2 lead. Washington took its first lead, 28-26, late in the first half on a 3-pointer by Ross.

The second half was close throughout. Washington led 51-46 with 4:31 to play before the Trojans rallied to tie the game and send it into overtime.

It was only the second road game of the season for Washington, which entered the game as the second-highest scoring team in the country, trailing only VMI.

Vucevic led all scorers with 28 points. He was 14 for 14 from the free throw line and also grabbed 14 rebounds.
