Markieff Morris scored 21 points and grabbed nine rebounds Wednesday as No. 3 Kansas beat California 78-63 in the Jayhawks’ first true road game of the season.

Senior Tyrel Reed had 18 points and seven rebounds for Kansas (11-0), and freshman guard Josh Selby added 18 points in his second career game.

Senior center Markhuri Sanders-Frison recorded his second straight double-double (10 points and 12 rebounds) for Cal (6-5), which trailed 38-30 at halftime. Jorge Gutierrez and Allen Crabbe added 15 and 11 points, respectively.

Kansas opened the second half with a 9-0 run before Cal answered with its own 13-0 run, which included three technical fouls and the ejection of Kansas junior Marcus Morris.

Kansas took command of the game with a 21-6 run and led 71-53 after Markieff Morris scored with 5:31 remaining.

After being suspended for the first nine games by the NCAA, Selby scored 21 points in his debut Saturday against USC. Considered among the top prospects in the country, Selby made 3-of-4 3-pointers and tallied three assists against Cal.

Kansas, which has also defeated Pac-10 schools Arizona, UCLA and USC this season, held Cal to 20-of-59 (33.9 percent) shooting, including 4-of-24 (16.7 percent) from beyond the arc.

The game was designated as the first Pete Newell Classic in honor of Hall of Fame coach Pete Newell, who led the Bears to the NCAA title in 1959.
