Draymond Green had 18 points and 12 rebounds as No. 2 Michigan State emerged with an 82-73 victory Tuesday over visiting South Carolina.

The Spartans shot 54 percent from the field (29 for 54) and outrebounded the Gamecocks 41-32. Senior guard Durrell Summers scored 22 points while Kalin Lucas, the reigning Big Ten Player of the Year, had only five points.

After leading by five with seven minutes left in the first half, Michigan State (2-0) went on a 16-4 run to lead 42-25. The Spartans shot 55 percent (16 for 29) from the field and recorded 15 assists in the first half.

South Carolina (1-1) opened the second half with four 3-pointers in the first four minutes, but shot 36 percent from the field (25 for 70) against the Spartans, who are vying for their third consecutive trip to the Final Four.

Michigan State took a 62-46 lead with 10:39 remaining when forward Delvon Roe converted a three-point play. Roe arrived just before tipoff after performing in a Shakespeare play on campus, and finished with 15 points.

The Gamecocks pulled to within 68-60 with 4:16 remaining on Stephen Spinella’s jumper from the right wing.

Freshman guard Bruce Ellington scored 22 points for South Carolina, which was picked to finish last in the SEC East preseason media poll. After scoring 20 in their season-opening victory over Elon, senior forward Sam Muldrow was held to five points against the Spartans.
