No. 19 Memphis used a suffocating defense and some deadly 3-point shooting to bounce Centenary 104-40 in their home-opening laugher Friday at FedEx Forum.

Freshman Antonio Barton, considered the next in line of future NBA point guards from Memphis, led seven players in double figures with 20 points for a Memphis club that went 24-10 a season ago.

Former Tiger point guards Derrick Rose and Tyreke Evans won back-to-back rookie-of-the-year honors the last two years.

The Tigers limited The Gentlemen to 5-of-27 shooting in the first half and killed them on the boards by a 22-7 margin to take a 52-20 edge. Centenary shot 12-of-48 for the game.

Memphis shot 15-of-26 on 3-pointers, led by Barton and Charles Carmouche, who drained four each.

Jeron Trotman scored nine points for The Gents, who were 8-21 last season and 3-15 in the Summit League.
