Senior guard Gary Payton II flirted with a triple-double while leading Oregon State to an 85-70 victory over 21st-ranked USC on Sunday at Gill Coliseum in Corvallis, Ore.

Payton had 22 points, 15 rebounds, eight assists and four steals for Oregon State (12-6, 3-4 Pac-12), which snapped a three-game losing streak. Freshman forward Tres Tinkle had 18 points and seven rebounds, freshman forward Drew Eubanks scored 12 points and blocked three shots, and freshman guard Stephen Thompson Jr. scored 11 points.

The Beavers went up 72-58 on a layup by Eubanks with 5:47 remaining. The Trojans stormed back, outscoring Oregon State 8-0 over the next 1:25 to cut the deficit to six with 4:22 to go, but two big baskets by Payton helped the Beavers regain control.

The teams traded leads a number of times over the first seven minutes until Oregon State surged ahead with a 9-3 run to go up 17-13 on a free throw by Thompson. USC tied the game on a putback by Stewart, but the Beavers took a 25-22 lead on a dunk by junior guard Malcolm Duvivier, who finished with nine points.

The Trojans responded with an 8-0 run to take a 30-25 lead. They led 38-31 following a layup by sophomore guard Jordan McLaughlin with 1:58 to play in the opening half, but a 3-pointer by Duvivier helped the Beavers cut the deficit to four at the break.

Oregon State carried that momentum into the second period, starting the half with a 9-2 run to take a 45-42 lead. A subsequent 9-0 run put the Beavers up 54-45. USC cut the deficit to four on a 3-pointer by Reinhardt, but the Beavers established a double-digit advantage when Thompson scored to give his team a 66-56 lead.

Oregon State shot 47.1 percent from the field. The Beavers made just 3 of 18 from 3-point range, but they converted 17 of 19 free-throw opportunities.

USC shot just 33.9 percent from the field. The Trojans were 6 of 24 from beyond the arc. They attempted 38 free throws but missed 14, converting just 63.2 percent.

McLaughlin and freshman forward Bennie Boatwright struggled for USC, combining for 13 points on 3-of-16 shooting.
